ELA

This week we learned that trees are living things because

they need food, water, air, and grow by themselves.  We read the book “Are Trees Alive” and compared our

bodies to parts of a tree.  For example, the tree roots are

like our feet that anchor us to the ground.  The tree trunk

is like our legs that support our bodies while the tree’s

bark is like our skin that protects the inside.

We also learned to read words that end with “ff, zz, ll, ss”

and the high frequency words off, and which.

Math

This week students sorted objects into groups and then

compared the total number of objects.  We also continued

working on addition and subtraction fluency.

P2:  Supporting others when they struggle

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical

piece of being human. You support others by listening

while they describe an event and their feelings about it,

taking action to help people in need, or simply just

being there and sitting together in silence.

Science:  Animal Needs: Safety

In this Read-Along lesson, a girl notices all the holes

in the trees around her house—and sets out to discover

how they got there, and why they matter. The students

then listened for animal sounds and pretended to be

woodpeckers.

home every night.

Centers:

This week we played with 3D foam shapes, made a

3D shape book, played Sight Word Bingo, and filled

out surveys of our classmates.

We started our new Tree Module this week and

learned how to be a researcher.  We learned to

look closely at things, record observations, and

gather evidence to determine if something is

living or nonliving.   We created a “living things

criteria anchor chart” to show our growing

understanding of what’s alive.

We also learned to read words that contain

welded sounds ing, ang, ong, ung and the new

words other, only

Math

Students are building and counting solid shapes

and working to remember the names of these new

shapes.   We are also working on addition and

subtraction fluency.

P2:  Leadership

Leadership is getting others to do what needs to

be done while maintaining group morale to

ensure readiness to act in the future. This character

strength’s focus is on the personal qualities of

leaders, rather than the practice of leadership.

Science:  Animal Needs: Shelter

We focused on animals and their habitats.  Animals

need a safe place to live that meets their needs.  We

pretended to be a squirrel and learned why a

squirrel needs a home high in the trees.

ELA

We finished our Train module this week by writing

paragraphs about subways and completing a class

book about our favorite kind of trains.  Students chose

between passenger trains, cargo trains, subways, and

monorails  before writing  a complete sentence about it

for our class book. Finally we read our class book together

and added it to our class library.

We also learned to read words that contained the

welded sounds ink, ank, onk, unk and the new words goes, does.

Math

Students are identifying shapes as flat (2D) or solid (3D)

as they build and sort shapes.  They are learning the

names of common 3 dimensional shapes.  Students

were also introduced to the language to compare

weight and capacity.

P2: Forgiveness

Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured,

and allow yourself to reconcile with the person who

hurt you.  We practiced apologizing by saying  “I’m sorry.

How can I make it better?” and then forgiving that person

by saying “I forgive you”

Science:

This week, we learned about animals and their survival needs.

Our lesson was called, “Why does a woodpecker peck wood?”

We learned how every animal has the need to find food.

When we see animals in the wild, very often they are looking

for food. You can encourage your child’s curiosity at home!

It’s great for a child to have the experience of keeping and

helping sustain a critter that’s been caught outside. It could

be as simple as keeping a bug in a jar, even just for a couple of

days. Ask your child what kinds of things the creature might

need. You can guide them to realize that it may need holes

poked in a lid (for air). Together, you can search online to

find out what the animal eats, and your child can go out and

find food to give it. Make sure to release the critter after a

few days!

Centers:

We enjoyed Dr. Seuss centers this week by cutting, sorting and

gluing rhyming words, counting Dr. Seuss characters and

graphing them,  playing a Dr. Suess fishing game to practice

addition fluency, and playing a CVC word dice game.
