Hesston Steam Museum Information

Dearest Kindergarten Families,

May 15 is our big trip to Hesston Train Museum. We will leave Lincoln at 8:45 ET

for the 45 minute bus ride.  There we will rotate through 6 different activities,

including a few train rides and learning about steam engines. Students will need

a sack lunch for this field trip.  We will plan on requesting lunches from the school

for your student unless you would like to pack a lunch for them yourself.  We ask

that anything you send is disposable, as we do not want any lunch boxes or

containers left behind.   Please dress your student in their Laps for Lincoln shirts.

We need plenty of chaperones to make this a successful learning experience.

The cost for parents is $10 per person.  You will also need to provide your own

transportation and meet us at Hesston by 9:30 ET.  You may also bring your own

lunch if you want to.  Children are able to be taken home from the Museum if you

wish.  You just need to sign them out with your child’s teacher.  We will leave

Hesston between 1:00-1:15 ET and return to Lincoln around 2:00 ET.  Please help

us by filling out this form so we can order lunches and let the museum know how

many parents will be attending.  Please fill out this form (same link as above) as

soon as possible, but no later than May 1.  We look forward to this fun-filled learning

adventure with you and your child!

Thank you for your continued support,

Lincoln Kindergarten Teachers

Volunteers need to have the volunteer form filled out as well.

Happy Spring Break Everyone!

Save travels to all who are leaving St. Joe.

ELA

We read books about passenger trains and learned to write an

informative paragraph about a monorail.  We learned about

focus statements, supporting details, and concluding sentences.

While you are on break, I hope you, most importantly, enjoy

new experiences and find time to develop relationships with

your children.  However if you are looking for other learning

opportunities, please see the following suggestions that connect

with our current Module lessons: Encourage your student to read

Decodable Readers or books of your choosing every night.

Practice reading and spelling regularly spelled, one-syllable

words with a middle short vowel sound (e.g., "pat,"  "chat," "tap").

Math

We finished our unit by counting groups of up to 20 images.

Students worked with images arranged in lines, arrays, circles,

and on 10-frames.  Images arranged in a circle were tricky for

students and we learned that it is very important to keep track

of which images have been counted.  After counting groups and

keeping track of what was counted, students practiced recording

the numbers to show how many.  We also started a new unit to

reinforce counting concepts as students built with pattern blocks.

By the end of next week, students will be able to put together

pattern blocks to represent equations.

P2: Cheering others’ successes…

is grounded in being happy for others when they make progress

and then being excited when they do succeed. When we cheer

others, they will return the favor and encourage us on our path

to success.

Science:  Plant Needs: Water and Light

In this Read-Along lesson, Sam wonders why his grandmother

wants to keep an old log in her yard—until he begins to meet

a few of her friends.  Students then pretended to be lizards

eating ants, and discovered why old logs are helpful to animals.

Rainbow Words

Please keep practicing these important words at home every night.

Sight Word List

Centers:

We enjoyed celebrating St. Patrick’s Day by graphing Skittles,

coloring rainbows by sight words, and searching for hidden words

within Leprechaun pictures.

Tinker Time:

We are just about to fill our star jar! We will be earning tinker time.

Please send in empty paper towel or tp tubes, empty tissue boxes,

shoe boxes, pieces of cardboard, duct tape, egg cartons or anything else you can

think of that the kids would have fun tinkering with. Thank you!

Classroom needs:

Large glue sticks.  If you are able, we could use some new glue

sticks to finish off the end of the year.

ELA

We spent another week learning to find the main idea

and details in our books about trains. We explored the

various train car types and the different jobs found on

a train.  We practiced blending and segmenting sounds

in words with short and long /e/ sounds to form words

Math

Students counted groups of up to 20 images arranged in

lines, arrays, circles, and on 10-frames. Students use

methods of keeping track of images especially when

counting images in circles. Students also practiced

writing numbers 11–20 to represent quantities.

P2: Social Intelligence

Social intelligence helps individuals build relationships.

It allows an individual to form friendships and alliances.

People with social intelligence can “read” other people’s

faces and know what motivates them.

Science: Plant Needs: Water and Light

We learned what a plant needs to grow.  We watched

real seeds germinate and grow and learned how we can

help nurture them.

Rainbow Words

Please keep practicing these important words at home every night.

Sight Word List

Centers:

We made shamrocks, used t0s and 1s to make teen numbers,

played a math game on ipads, made words with pattern blocks,

and had fun with playdough.

Classroom needs:

Large glue sticks

Parking:

Please remember NOT to park on the left side of the road

when picking up students. We recommend you park at the

church and walk up the path.  Also please do not allow

children to play on the playground until after the 4pm bell.

Thank you.

ELA

We continued learning to find the main idea and details of

informational texts about trains.  We also learned about the

different parts of trains and about the engineers that operate

the train from the locomotive’s cab.  We practiced blending

words with short and long /u/ sounds and read the words

Math

In this week’s lessons, students see the numbers 11–19 as 10

ones and some more ones. They composed and decomposed

teen numbers and recorded the compositions and decompositions

with objects, drawings, and expressions and equations. Students

used fingers and 10-frames to represent these numbers. To

represent a teen number, they filled a 10-frame and showed

some more ones, which they arranged in different ways. To

determine the number of objects, students counted all or counted

on from 10.

Centers:

We made leprechauns,  counted gold pieces, assembled Dr. Suess

puzzles, and practiced blending using green markers, and used mini

locomotives to practice making teen numbers.

Report Cards:

As report cards arrive home this weekend, please be aware that

standards reflect end of year expectations.  It is common for your

child to have several 1’s on their report cardsAdditionally,

NWEA scores are based on midyear growth.  Please remember

that growth happens at different rates for kindergarteners.

All academic concerns have already been addressed at conferences.

Tinker Time:

We are filling our star jar to earn tinker time! I will need some help with this. Please send in your empty paper towel tubes, tp tubes, clean lids from jars, unused craft supplies, etc. We will let imaginations run wild with this fun time to create!

Sarett Nature Center

On March 12th, we will be riding the bus to Sarett Nature Center to learn about Maple trees and maple syrup. We cannot fit parents on the bus due to three classes. If you are interested in joining us on this field trip, you are welcome to meet us at Sarett no later than 10 AM using your own transportation. Please let me know if you plan to attend so that we can be ready to meet you. Please be prepared to pay the entrance fee as well.

P2: Teamwork

Being a part of a team often means deferring or delaying

individual accomplishments in order to ensure that the

group maintains a high level of success. The positive feelings

associated with being part of a larger whole can help us

become less self-centered.
