   Kindergarten Announcements

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everyone!  I am very grateful for the opportunity to teach and care for your child.  I am also thankful to all of you for the support you give your child and our school

ELA

We read a new book called Weather Explore My World and learned to find the Main Idea and key details by using picture clues and listening closely to the text.  We learned details about the sun, clouds, weather tools, and rainbows.  Ask your kindergartener what an anemometer is and why you can always find a windsock at a football stadium.  🙂

We also learned to identify Cc and Gg and read the new words are, you, and as.

Math

We described and drew different shapes using dot paper.  We found shapes around our classroom and even made shapes with straws.  We also counted out pattern blocks and made quilt patterns and explored putting together pattern blocks with sides touching to form larger shapes.

P2: Gratitude

Being thankful for what we have is something that we can practice every day. We sang songs about being thankful and learned that it’s important to tell others thank you for the things we receive.

Snow Gear Reminders

Please remember that students must have boots and snowpants to play in the snow during recess.  Students who do not have boots and snow pants will get to enjoy playing on the blacktop.  It is very helpful to send a "snow bag" (in addition to their backpack) to carry their snow gear to and from school.  This allows them to keep everything in one place.  The bag should be large enough to fit everything (including boots) inside easily.  Also...please be sure to send indoor shoes to school if they are wearing boots during arrival.

We will continue to go over procedures at school as you continue to work on dressing independently for the snow at home. Thanks so much!   This is the procedure we teach at school.

  1. Snowpants

  2. Jacket

  3. Scarg

  4. Hat

  5. Boots

  6. Mittens

Special Note:  if there is not snow on the ground, you do not need to send snow gear.

Holiday Fun:

Kindergarten classes will be decorating gingerbread houses on December 12!  We are so excited to give your child this fun experience.  However, we do need parent helpers.  We could use 2-3 volunteers on Tuesday or Wednesday (December 10,11) to assemble and glue the gingerbread houses to milk cartons.  I also need about 6 parents to assist at tables while the students are decorating the houses (December 12).  Please email me if you are willing to help.  Thanks!

ELA

We spent this week learning about different types of weather that occur due to moisture in the air.  We learned about the different kinds of clouds, rain, and snow.  For the final component of weather, we learned about wind and how wind happens when warm air moves up and cooler air moves in to replace it.  There are many different kinds of wind and sometimes it can cause damage.  Ask your kindergartener if they remember the name of a strong windstorm (a gale).

Our new sight words are he, she, me and we learned to spell the /u/ and /kw/ sounds.

Math

We continued with our third math unit by learning to distinguish triangles and rectangles from other shapes.  They discovered what makes a shape a triangle and what makes a shape a rectangle and square.

P2: Curiosity

Curiosity is in all of us and is what opens up our minds to new things.  We took turns finishing the sentence:  I wonder……and learned how curious our minds really are.

We expressed some holiday spirit by making Thanksgiving placemats this week.  I will laminate them and send them home next week.  We also completed numbers to 100 puzzles, made Thanksgiving food with playdough, and used magnifying glasses to find simple words.

ELA

We learned this week about temperature and air pressure which are two of the four components that make up weather. We used a thermometer to watch the red line go up and down as the temperature gets warmer and cooler.  We also learned that air pressure is when the particle of air press together or pull apart.  High pressure usually results in fair sunny weather and low pressure results in wet, cloudy weather.

Our new sight words are that and not and we learned to spell the /w/ and /b/ sounds.

Math

We began our third math unit which includes identifying shapes that are the same and using words to describe them.

P2: Integrity

People with integrity do the right thing even when no one is looking.  We spent many class meetings talking about this word and put this word into action.

Thank you!…to the Halloween party committee!  You did such a great job creating a very fun day for us all!  The kids will remember it forever.

ELA

We started a new Module called Weather Wonders.  In this module, students will build their literacy and science skills as they engage in a study of the weather.  We started this week by learning the four components of weather which are:

  • Temperature

  • Air Pressure

  • Moisture

  • Wind

In phonics, we reviewed the letters we’ve learned and added two high frequency words into and said

Math

Students compared numbers in any way that makes sense to them.  They compared by

  • using the count sequence to compare which number came first.,

  • by creating groups of objects and matching them.

  • and by beginning to automatically know which numbers are less or more than a given number

P2: Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm gives positive energy to you and the people around you! When you cheer on your teammates at a sports game, you’re giving them energy to keep playing at their best!
